Intro to Homebrewing Biodiesel

See a homebrewing site in action – we’ll make a batch of fuel during the class.  You’ll learn the whole process from testing the veggie oil, brewing the biodiesel, washing it, filtering it, and putting it in your vehicle.

Priority is given to those who have a diesel vehicle and a site to homebrew.  We’ll schedule a processor & washtank building workshop after this, for people who want to build one.

Taught by Jennifer Radtke of the BioFuel Oasis and Berkeley Biodiesel Collective.

Upcoming Intro to Homebrewing Biodiesel class:

  • Homebrewing Biodiesel
    Sunday, February 15, 2009, 9am - 4pm
    Cost: $90
Will be held at the BioFuel Oasis, 2465 4th Street, Berkeley, CA

Biodiesel 101: How To Make & Use Biodiesel

This class and the "Biodiesel 201: Build Your Own Processor" class are usually offered together, so you can sign up for both if you'd like.

Is it really possible to transform everyday cooking oil into safe and reliable fuel?

Yes—and in this popular class you'll learn everything you need to run your vehicle on 100% biodiesel: testing the fuel, brewing the biodiesel, washing it, filtering it, and putting it in your vehicle.

In this hands-on class, you'll also learn:

  • How to make fuel from fresh vegetable oil or restaurant waste oil
  • How a biodiesel processor works
  • How to maintain your biodiesel vehicle

Upcoming How To Make & Use Biodiesel class:

  • How To Make & Use Biodiesel
    Saturday, February 28, 2009, 9am - 5pm
Will be held at the Green Building Exchange,
1 Chestnut Avenue, South San Francisco, CA

Biodiesel 201: Build Your Own Biodiesel Processor

You must have taken one of our intro classes before you take this class.  This class and the "Biodiesel 101: How To Make & Use Biodiesel" class are usually offered together, so you can sign up for both if you'd like, and take the Biodiesel 101 class a day before this class.

Manufactured biodiesel processors can cost anywhere from $1500 to $7000.  In this workshop, you’ll learn how to build your own, small-scale (~40 gallon) biodiesel processor from start to finish using materials that cost less than $700!

The first 5 students who sign up will have the option to bring the materials to build their own processors to take home at the end of the class (contact us for more details).
Or, if you prefer, learn by assisting someone else.

You'll learn how to use and maintain a processor and test out a new processor by making a fresh batch of biodiesel fuel.  More advanced topics in home brewing biodiesel will be covered as well, such as fuel procurement, quality testing and equipment compatibility.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll be well on your way to making your own affordable, cleaner-burning alternative to petroleum diesel.

Upcoming Build Your Own Processor class:

  • Build Your Own Processor
    Sunday, March 1, 2009, 9am - 5pm
Will be held at the Green Building Exchange,
1 Chestnut Avenue, South San Francisco, CA
